How a Smart Buying Decision Can Save You Money

At my home, I noticed something most of us ignore—ceiling fans running almost the entire day. We have three fans that typically run 15–20 hours daily for about 10 months in a year. A standard fan usually consumes around 70–75 watts, and that adds up more than we think.

Let’s break it down.

Old fan electricity usage:

  • 75W × 20 hours = 1.5 units per day
  • 1.5 × 300 days = 450 units per year
  • 450 × ₹8 = ₹3,600 per year (for one fan)

I decided to replace these with Atomberg fans in October. These are rated at around 25W at higher speeds.

New fan electricity usage:

  • 25W × 20 hours = 0.5 units per day
  • 0.5 × 300 days = 150 units per year
  • 150 × ₹8 = ₹1,200 per year (for one fan)

Yearly savings:

  • ₹3,600 – ₹1,200 = ₹2,400 saved per fan every year

Each new fan cost me around ₹2,300, so the cost gets recovered in roughly a year. On top of that, I sold the old fans for ₹500 each, bringing my effective cost down to ₹1,800 per fan.

What this shows is simple: small upgrades in daily-use appliances can make a noticeable difference in your yearly expenses.

A practical rule I follow:

  • If the cost of upgrading an appliance is recovered within two years through savings, it’s usually worth doing.
