The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a pioneering school meal program to facilitate the education of underprivileged children in India, whose numbers are alarmingly high. Nearly 13.6 million children in the age group of 6 to 14 are out of schools according to the EFA Global Report 2007, UNESCO. Confronting hunger and illiteracy has been the greatest
challenge of this country and Akshaya Patra is on the frontlines of this struggle.
By providing unlimited, nutritious, hygienically cooked hot noon meals in government schools and government run day-care centers (anganwadis), in partnership with the Central and State Governments, the Akshaya Patra program strives to promote universalization of primary education.
Health and education incentives further supplement the central activity.
With a secular, non-discriminatory approach, the Akshaya Patra program which started in the year 2000, serving 1500 children in Bangalore, now reaches out to over 13 million impoverished children in over 18 locations across Eight States in the country. This has led to an increase in school enrollment and attendance, reduced drop-outs and enhanced children’s general well-being.
You have the power to ensure that no child is deprived of education because of hunger.
